Some of the key takeaway points embedded within the videos are noted here with suggested assignments that I have done as a student and many times during my career. They have offered them to thousands of my students who have profited from them.
Have available different types of sketchbooks from simple, inexpensive pads with ones that have high-grade paper.
SKETCHING: The Roots of the Tree of Impressionism
Sketching is the seedbed for inspiration. Delacroix said a sketch with feelings is as good as a finished product. Sketchy lines in a drawing will give you sketchy paint strokes, which for an impressionist is essential.
Make sketches of a still life in various arrangements.
• Before you draw, draw it with your eyes; draw it in space before putting it down onto paper.
Draw the still life as accurately as you can.
• For each arrangement, measure each object for size relationship to each other (Poussin’s elements for beauty - we will look at the dot method in Part Two to assist your drawing skills).
Select one arraignment
• Draw the still life again from memory. Use line variation to create feeling (Delacroix).
• Draw the still life from memory but reimagine it changing the arrangement – be creative.
• Draw the still life again from memory– exaggerate certain elements, alter some of its measurements, its forms (as in Ingres).
Use a still life with live fruits or vegetables.
• Draw with your senses – engage your subject physically - look at it, touch it, caress it, smell it, taste it. Then draw it from sensations (Corot).
• Draw it outside to experience the light (Corot).
