Sargent – A 3-step Layering Painting Process

Do it in stages. After the drawing, layout the 3 layers of paint
• Layout a thin watercolor-like wash as the foundation
• Add a layer of Intermediate paint.
• Next, a layer of impasto paint with illustrative (accurate shape and form – the scientific) and expressive (various strokes)

Chase – Charge your batteries.
Before you paint, state what you desire. Ask for the eyes of our hearts to be open. Be a wondrous child.
Create a landscape, use your imagination.
• Use your favorite poem, song, movie as an inspiration.
• Consider having the subject be not just a tree but a representation of a person or an idea.
• Anything is possible if you paint from your soul.
• Tell a story.


Hassam – Paint your imprint
• What is your first impression? What does it feel like? Imprint yourself. As if placing your hand into the snow, lift your hand, now paint the impression left in the snow. That is an impression.
• Create a landscape or still life and paint your impression of it. See it anew.
